Hepatitis can be prevented

Hepatitis refers to a health condition wherein the liver is inflamed due to viral infection. Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C which are what we call the three main types of hepatitis.

Hepatitis A is primarily transmitted through fecal and oral contact. This means that the Hepatitis A virus can be spread by being in contact with people who are diagnosed with Hepatitis A or by consuming drinks and beverages that are feces laden (no matter how small the amount is).

Hepatitis B and C are primarily transmitted through contact with body fluids such as semen and infected blood. This means that the Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C viruses can be transmitted through sexual activity, sharing of needles either through medical procedures or drug use and even passed on from mother to child upon giving birth.

There are vaccinations to prevent Hepatitis A and B but not Hepatitis C. Here are a few preventive tips that might help lower the chances of getting hepatitis.

  • Regularly wash your hands.

Hand washing is one great, simple and often overlooked preventive tip for contacting most diseases and illnesses. Hand washing is particularly effective in preventing Hepatitis A as this type of Hepatitis is transmitted through the fecal – oral route. Wash your hands often most especially if you do not know who is handling the food you’re about to consume or how the food is prepared.

  • Observe proper use of needles. Ensure that needles are used for one time only and are not recycled.
  • Get vaccinated against Hepatitis A and B.
  • Practice safe sex. Always be protected.
